Before I wrote resumes, I recruited accounting, finance and executive professionals across the UK, Australia and New Zealand. I read thousands of accountant resumes, interviewed the people behind them and saw which ones hiring managers asked to meet.
For the past decade I have worked as a career strategist and resume writer. I have written more than 5,000 resumes, and I write every one myself.
The mistakes that make strong accountants look junior
Duties, not results
"Responsible for month end and balance sheet reconciliations" tells the reader what the job was, not what changed because you did it.
Routine work that reads as routine
A four-day close, a clean audit or a payroll tax review is real value. Written as a task, it disappears.
No scale
Revenue, entities, sites, transactions, team size and who you report to. Without them, the reader has to guess your level.
A wall of systems
Listing every ledger and tool you have touched drowns out what you did with them.
A title that undersells the role
Many Senior Accountants already do Finance Manager work. If the resume does not show it, recruiters will not see it.
