Executive resume writing for senior leaders
Most executive resumes do not fail because the person lacks experience. They fail because the reader cannot quickly understand what that experience adds up to.
20 years in executive search. 5,000+ resumes written. Direct work with every client.
Alongcareerdoesnotautomaticallycreateastrongexecutiveresume.Thereaderneedstounderstandwhatkindofleaderyouareandwhyyourbackgroundisrelevanttotheopportunityinfrontofthem.
A Chief Executive, Managing Director or General Manager may have held responsibility across several functions. A functional leader may now be ready for a broader enterprise role. Someone with 15 years in one organisation may have progressed through several significantly different mandates.
Without a clear position, this breadth can look unfocused rather than valuable. The resume must bring the career together without making every role appear equally important or forcing unrelated goals into one document.
20 years on the other side of the hiring table
I am no longer a recruiter. That experience now allows me to assess a career through the eyes of the candidate, recruiter and hiring organisation.
For 20 years, I worked in executive recruitment across the UK, Australia and New Zealand. I took briefs from CEOs, CFOs, boards, business owners and senior hiring leaders. I reviewed hundreds of thousands of applications, built shortlists and saw the questions that were raised about candidates when they were no longer in the room.
For the past 10 years, I have worked as an executive career strategist and resume writer. I have written more than 5,000 resumes for senior professionals across finance, commercial leadership, operations, transformation, risk and broader executive management.
I understand what you want the market to see. I also understand what a reader may question, misunderstand or miss completely.
The common mistakes that weaken your case
The professional position is unclear
The resume may present you as a General Manager, functional specialist, transformation leader, commercial executive and consultant at the same time. All of those descriptions may be accurate, but the market still needs one clear answer about the roles for which you should be considered.
The document records the career rather than interpreting it
A chronological account explains where you have worked. It does not necessarily explain the pattern across your career or the value you now bring. The resume needs to connect your experience to the problems an organisation may hire you to solve.
Responsibilities dominate the evidence
Leadership resumes often contain extensive descriptions of oversight, accountability and stakeholder management. Those responsibilities establish scope, but they do not show whether performance improved, risk reduced, revenue increased, costs changed, capability grew or the organisation became more effective.
The level of authority is difficult to assess
Job titles alone do not establish seniority. The reader needs context such as reporting lines, business size, geographic reach, team leadership, budget or P&L responsibility, board exposure and decision-making authority. Without this information, a senior leader can be assessed below their actual level.
Achievements lack context
"Led transformation" or "improved performance" may be accurate, but these statements do not explain what was wrong, what you changed or why the result mattered. Strong evidence connects the business situation, your decisions and the outcome.
The most relevant experience is underweighted
The current or most relevant role may receive the same space as positions held 15 years ago. Significant leadership work can also be buried beneath operational detail. The resume should give the greatest weight to the evidence that supports your next move.
One document is being used for conflicting goals
An executive resume, board resume and consulting profile serve different purposes. Likewise, a resume targeting Chief Operating Officer roles should not attempt to make an equal case for transformation, commercial and functional leadership positions. When the goals are materially different, separate documents may be required.
LinkedIn presents a different professional identity
The resume may position you as an enterprise leader while LinkedIn still reflects an earlier functional identity. Recruiters, executive search consultants and hiring leaders often review both. Inconsistency creates uncertainty about your direction and level.
What a strong executive resume makes clear
The evidence a senior reader needs
A strong executive resume should help the reader understand:
A strong resume cannot make someone suitable for a role they are not ready for. It can ensure that credible experience is not weakened by unclear positioning or poor presentation.
Strategy before writing
I do not start by rewriting the existing resume.
Career analysis & strategy
We establish what you want next, how the market is likely to assess you and which parts of your career provide the strongest evidence for that direction.
Mandate & context
What you inherited, what needed to change, the level of authority you held, business size, complexity and operating environment.
Accountability & scope
Board and executive engagement, team size, capability and organisational scope, significant decisions and judgement.
Outcomes & transition
Transformation, growth, turnaround or integration work, measurable outcomes, and experience that should be reduced, reframed or removed.
Written from scratch
Once the position is clear, I write the resume from the ground up. Not from a template, not delegated, not keyword-stuffed.
Review & refinement
I complete the analysis, strategy, writing and review personally, so the context from our conversations stays consistent across every part of the work.
This work determines what belongs in the resume, what requires greater weight and what may be distracting from your intended position. The resume is generally three to four pages and is structured to make the career easy to assess. It uses a clean, Word-compatible format without photos, skill bars, icons, split columns or unnecessary design features.
Your complete market position
For most senior clients, the resume forms part of a broader market position. This may include:
Career analysis and strategy
Clarifying your target, assessing whether it is realistic and determining how your career should be presented.
Executive resume
A clear and commercially grounded document written around the roles you want next.
LinkedIn optimisation
A profile that supports the same professional position and helps the right people understand your value.
Targeted cover letter
A letter that connects your experience directly to a specific brief rather than repeating the resume.
Executive coaching
Practical support with market approach, recruiter conversations, professional position and concerns that may affect your candidacy.
Platinum clients also receive ongoing support with role-specific applications, interview preparation, negotiation and their search for six months from when their documents are ready, then month by month if they need longer.

Client outcomes
C-suite & GM
Clients secured C-suite, General Manager, functional leadership and board opportunities after clarifying their direction and presenting stronger evidence of their value.
Limited → traction
Some came after months of limited response despite significant experience. Once their resume, LinkedIn profile and market position presented one consistent case, recruiters and hiring leaders were better able to understand where they fitted.
Right level
Others were already attracting interest but were being considered for roles below their capability or in the wrong professional category. The work changed the quality of the case being presented.
The resume does not secure an appointment on its own. It changes the quality of the case being presented and helps the right people assess your experience at the correct level.
