The Insider Advantage.
Resume writing for CFOs and senior finance leaders
You can lead a year-end close, present a board paper and deliver a finance transformation. Writing about yourself is a different task.
20 years building finance shortlists. 5,000+ resumes written. Direct support across Australia and New Zealand.
Strong finance leaders are often overlooked
Most finance resumes I review are not failing because the person lacks experience. They fail because the reader cannot quickly see the level at which that person operates, the scale they have managed or the commercial difference they have made.
The resume may contain years of experience, substantial responsibilities and strong technical credentials, but still leave the reader unclear about whether the person is ready for a CFO, Finance Director, Head of Finance or broader commercial leadership role.
For a senior finance leader, a resume is not simply a record of employment. It is a commercial case for why you should be considered for a particular brief.
The gap
Recruiters and hiring leaders only know what your resume, LinkedIn profile and conversations communicate.
At senior level, people rarely spend time working it out. They move to the candidate whose relevance and value are easier to see.
20 years building finance shortlists
I spent 20 years making hiring decisions
For 20 years, I recruited accounting, finance and executive professionals across the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
I took briefs from CEOs, CFOs, business owners, boards and senior hiring leaders. I reviewed hundreds of thousands of applications, built shortlists and saw how hiring decisions were made once the candidates were no longer in the room.
For the past 10 years, I have worked as an executive career strategist and resume writer. During that time, I have written more than 5,000 resumes and worked directly with CFOs, Finance Directors, Heads of Finance, Financial Controllers, FP&A leaders and senior commercial executives.
I am no longer a recruiter. That background now helps me assess a finance career from both sides of the hiring decision.
I understand what a senior finance candidate wants the market to see. I also understand what a recruiter, CEO or board member will question, what they will compare and what evidence they need before recommending an interview.
The common mistakes that hide your level
The resume describes the function rather than the impact
"Responsible for the finance function of a $400m business" establishes scale, but it does not explain what improved because you were there. A stronger resume shows how your work affected profit, cash flow, working capital, margin, risk, governance, decision-making or business performance.
The technical detail overwhelms the leadership story
Senior finance resumes can become crowded with reporting cycles, accounting standards, audit requirements and systems responsibilities. These are important, but they should not drown out your influence with the CEO, board, executive team, investors, lenders or operational leaders.
The scope is difficult to assess
Revenue, entities, regions, team size, reporting line, ownership structure, regulatory complexity and board exposure all help a reader determine your level. If this information is missing or spread across several pages, you may be assessed as operating at a lower level than you actually are.
The resume is aimed at too many roles
A turnaround CFO, private equity CFO, listed-company Finance Director and commercially focused Head of Finance are not the same proposition. Each brief places different weight on cash, growth, governance, transactions, transformation, operational performance and board engagement.
The current title understates the work
Many Financial Controllers, Group Financial Controllers and Heads of Finance are already performing significant parts of a CFO mandate. They may be advising the CEO, presenting to the board, leading transformation, managing funding relationships or influencing strategy.
The resume and LinkedIn profile tell different stories
The resume may position you for CFO appointments while LinkedIn still presents you as a technical finance specialist. Recruiters and hiring leaders frequently review both. The two documents need to support the same professional position.
What a strong finance resume makes clear
The evidence a senior finance reader needs
A strong finance resume should make it easy for the reader to understand:
You do not need to disclose commercially sensitive information to show impact. Scale, complexity and outcomes can be communicated without exposing information that should remain confidential.
Assessment before writing
I do not begin by editing your existing document.
The work starts with an in-depth career analysis and strategy consultation. We establish what you want next, whether that direction is commercially realistic and how your experience should be positioned for the market you are entering.
Steps 1 to 4: included in Gold and Platinum
Executive Career Evidence Questionnaire
Guided pre-work covering the most relevant roles, mandates, leadership scope, achievements and future objectives.
Executive Career and Market Assessment
I examine your career direction, market credibility, commercial evidence and the realities of the roles you are considering.
Executive Positioning Strategy Session
We define the target direction, executive value proposition, evidence hierarchy and criteria for a strong appointment.
Executive Positioning Suite
I personally write your executive resume, cover letter framework, LinkedIn profile and core executive introduction.
Steps 5 to 8: Platinum only
Market and Recruiter Strategy
We identify relevant search consultants, recruiters, networks and direct approach priorities, then review market response.
Serious Opportunity Assessment and Application
Each relevant role is assessed against the agreed criteria and the application is prepared for the specific mandate.
Interview Research, Written Preparation and Coaching
I research the organisation and decision-makers, prepare a detailed interview pack and coach you before the formal stage.
Offer Assessment, Negotiation and Appointment
We assess the role, package, incentives, reporting relationships and risk, then prepare the negotiation and final decision.
From there, I write the resume from scratch. I do not use a generic template, delegate the work to a junior writer or simply add keywords to the document you already have. The result is a clear, achievement-led and commercially focused resume that can be read easily by recruiters, hiring executives and common recruitment systems.
Your complete market position
The resume is one part of your market position. For most senior finance clients, the work also includes:
Career analysis and strategy
Clarifying what you want next, where your experience has the strongest value and which roles are a credible fit.
Executive resume
A three to four-page document written around scope, authority, leadership, commercial outcomes and relevance to the target market.
LinkedIn optimisation
A LinkedIn profile that supports the same position as the resume while improving how you are found and assessed by recruiters and executive search firms.
Targeted cover letter
A letter that connects your experience directly to the opportunity rather than repeating the resume.
Executive coaching
Practical support with market approach, recruiter conversations, positioning concerns and the issues that may affect your candidacy.
Platinum clients also receive ongoing support with role-specific applications, interview preparation, negotiation and their search until they secure a role.
Who I work with
Senior finance and commercial leaders across Australia and New Zealand
I work with senior finance and commercial leaders across Australia and New Zealand, including:
I also work with experienced finance executives preparing for board and advisory opportunities. Where the target is materially different, the executive resume and board resume are developed as separate documents.
Client outcomes
First CFO
A Financial Controller secured her first CFO position after we clarified the level at which she was already operating and repositioned her resume, LinkedIn profile and interview case accordingly.
Larger remit
Senior finance clients moved from being presented as technically strong professionals to being assessed as commercial leaders capable of advising CEOs, influencing boards and leading significant business change.
Interview traction
Clients gained interview traction after months of limited response, with stronger feedback from recruiters and several relevant processes opened.
The resume does not secure the role by itself. Its purpose is to make sure the right people can see the evidence for meeting you.
Individual results. Outcomes depend on the role, the market and the candidate.
